It’s a new year which means a new lineup of Marvel projects.
The first Marvel film of the year, “Captain America: Brave New World,” stars Anthony Mackie and was released on Feb. 14.
This new film explored how Sam Wilson, portrayed by Mackie, took on the heroic role of Captain America. Wilson was formerly known as Falcon who fought alongside Steve Rogers, the original Captain America.
With the help of some old friends, Wilson fought a new villain, Samuel Sterns, who attempted to disrupt the peace between the new U.S. President and the country’s alliances to uncover a hidden secret.
This action-packed film had a more evolving concept of self revelation and learning to deal with pressures and responsibility. Throughout the film, Wilson struggled with the weight that the title “Captain America” brought him.
While Rogers had consumed the super soldier serum, Wilson chose not to take it for his integrity. He wanted to show that anyone can be a hero but ultimately he began to question his decision and whether or not he was right for the role.
The most exciting feature of this film was the introduction of Thaddeus Ross’s alias, Red Hulk, played by Harrison Ford. Ross was a U.S. military general who caused a divide between the Avengers in previous Marvel films.
In this film he became more of a primary character. Ross became the new president of the United States taking place after the alien disturbances. Ross slowly transitioned into the Red Hulk and coped with his internal conflicts which resulted in an exhilarating fight between the Red Hulk and Captain America.
Within the last couple of years people had questioned the so-called updated CGI across different films compared to decades ago. In this case the most important scenes looked quite smooth, including Ross’s transformation into Red Hulk.
The only scenes that lacked clarity were the composition between the actors and the background of cherry blossom trees which played a symbolic role in the film. Overall the film did a nice job making the battles compelling to the audience.
Compared to previous Marvel films that came out last year, it felt more like the older films. They really displayed more action in this film with the fighter jets and violence which Marvel lost touch with over the years.
Rotten Tomatoes rated the film a 50% although it deserved more credit for the action alone.
In this film there is mention of bringing back the Avengers which sets the path for this new anticipated phase of Marvel. Every action fan should give this film a shot, especially Marvel fanatics who can’t wait to get a look at the Red Hulk and anticipate his return.
Like any other Marvel movie, it was a great family film even for young kids who have a hero to look up to. As the movie said, Captain America will return.
