The Maze Runner made a lot of loops regarding its plot. For one thing, by leaving a lot of events and or creatures unexplained, it led movie watchers into utter confusion. Surely, the book series written by James Dashner has a lot more description, as is typical for novels to do and yet this film failed to deliver a an exciting plot. Without giving too much away, there is a certain species that becomes dangerous to the characters in this film. The director Wes Ball failed to explore the species’ roots or how it came to exist. A lot of things in the film were left half told.
As for the cast, Dylan O’Brien plays Thomas, the main character who isn’t well liked by Gally, who is played by Will Poulter. Thomas seems to be special somehow, while Gally is not. Thomas is the last guy to enter their lost world and despite being a newbie, he excels in everything he tries for the first time, making him a favorite with the rest of the castaways except Gally, of course. Though he was the last male to enter, he wasn’t the last person. Teresa, played by British popular actress Kaya Scodelario, is the last one to enter their world. She, as many other newbies experience, does not recollect anything of her life prior to her arrival.
Although she is intended to have a big role in their mission to leave the maze, she doesn’t. Her character is rather plain and uninteresting. She’s more of a pretty face in the mix of all the males. She seems to have a connection with Thomas somehow, which is later revealed. However, nothing of note really ever occurs between them.
These teenagers are divided by the skills they perfect and the most important ones are the Runners, who actually risk their lives by going into the maze in an attempt to find a way out. Thomas eventually becomes one, as one would imagine being that he is the main character. Gally hates him even more because of his courageous attributes, which opens the door for major conflict and betrayal.
Other interesting characters are Chuck, a little boy played by Blake Cooper who forms a special bond with Thomas. He is very helpful with Thomas and quite a sweet boy and very likable character. There is also the leader, or who seems to be the leader, Newt played by Thomas Brodle-Sangster. His character is semi-odd because although he appears to be the know-it-all, he doesn’t. It is Thomas who finds everything there is to know about their dreadful situation, yet Newt is also quite likable and clever.
All in all, the film was captivating enough to keep the audience awake but it could have been a lot better. And don’t panic if you ever get lost, for there is always a way out.
