Mesa College had its 26th Annual Golden Scissors Fashion Show and Awards on May 18.
The fashion show was held in the Harbor Island Ballroom at the Sheraton. About 400 people attended, filling in the ballroom to a full house. At least 150 people were involved in putting this production together under the direction of fashion programs professors Andrea Marx and Susan Lazear.
Inside the ballroom there was a DJ spinning the music, a big runway with screens behind it and beside it displaying what category was being presented, names of the designers, and graphics.
The Mesa multimedia students created the graphics for the show.
Before the show there was silent auctions of many different items ranging from gift baskets to clothing and there was also a VIP dinner.
“The show was put on by the students to showcase their designs,” said Lazear.
Every year alumni are invited back each time to display some of their works. This year the designer who participated was Elena Ham, who started the show off with her glamorous white and off-white evening gowns while the song “Unforgettable” played in the background.
The judges came in before the show and judged each category. They gave out first, second and third place awards. Some awards were left as a surprise until the end, but the ones that had placed had the colored award ribbons attached to the outfit.
The categories were: Weekend Wear (Sportswear), Children. Day Wear/Career, Millinery (hat wear), Club Wear, Special Occasion, Retro-Redo and Fantasy Fashions, which were clothes made out of everything from newspaper, wire, credit cards, protest signs, shower curtains, and shelf liners. The winner of Fantasy Fashions category was Mary Drobnis.
The last category was collections which displayed designs from: Misty Frank, Maria Rodriguez, Elizabeth Ceyla, Penni Hawkins, Theresa Timony, Trista Roland, Neva Mackres, Laura Wuhrman, Cecilia Torres, Idan Barsheshet, Osbaldo Ahumada, Jimothy Hoang.
The children’s wear category opened with a song from “The Little Mermaid” and all the kids ran out on stage and waved and blew kisses.
Seventy-two models with all different body types displayed the designer’s designs.
Osbaldo Ahumada won first place for his Ole Modern collection, which was inspired from the 1940s Spanish Flamenco look.
The two biggest awards given were Best Workmanship to Maria Rodriguez, who won in almost every category. Most Creative was awarded to Ahumada.
Ahumada’s one goal was to “create a design that will accentuate the female figure.”
Maria Rodriguez commented that her inspiration for this collection was her vision of how women have achieved in this generation, making “the outside the same as what we feel from the inside.”
Mesa President Dr. Rita Cepeda presented the awards at the end of the show, saying she was very honored to be a part of such a great thing.
“I get to help move students on to the future,” said Cepeda.
All the designers ran on stage and bowed at the end, very excited to have completed the show.
DVDs and Photo CDs of the show are available for $10.
After the show, many in attendance went to Souplantaion, which donated 15 percent of sales generated to the San Diego Mesa College Fashion Program.
