The deadline to turn in applications for over $90,000 of available scholarships is Feb. 28 at 5:00 p.m.
Applications and biographical questionnaires can be printed out off of the Mesa College web site and completed applications must be turned in to room H-500.
The site lists 63 different scholarships with required GPA’s ranging from a 3.5 to a 2.0. There is a scholarship tailored to just about every type of student at Mesa from student athletes to architecture majors to students who come from single parent homes.
“We get a decent amount of applications,” said Student Services Assistant Courtney Lee. “Last year we received about 500 scholarship applications.”
Aside from specific requirements for the myriad scholarships available every application must be accompanied by the biographical questionnaire, at least one letter of recommendation and an essay.
According to the San Diego Mesa College scholarship web page, writing a strong scholarship essay can “make or break your chances of success.”
An hour-long workshop designed to help draft a successful essay will be held Feb. 22 at LRC-432 at 4:30 p.m.
Many of the scholarships will be awarded at the annual San Diego Mesa College Ruth Kern Scholarship Gala at the Double Tree Hotel April 29.
With the price of classes and books continuously on the rise even the minimum awarded of $250 can go a long way at Mesa.
“Some scholarships get pretty high, like $1000,” said Lee. “The average is around $500.”
