Due to an electrical malfunction in a cargo elevator, San Diego Mesa College’s Learning Resource Center (LRC) was closed on Tuesday Dec. 13. The building was soon blocked off from public access, interrupting the flow of finals week on campus.
According to Anabel Pulido, the LRC was closed around 7 a.m. this morning, before too many Mesa students were on campus. This began the airing out process for the LRC so that students may return during the busy week to prepare themselves for finals. Being as this is one of the busiest weeks for students and faculty, the situation was being handled as quickly and orderly as possible, to keep the nerves of everyone at ease.
With the building being closed, the relocation of the services offered began in order to accommodate Mesa’s large population. “We’re hoping it opens up this afternoon, but scheduled the rest of the day outside building,” said Tim McGrath, Vice President of Instruction. The building itself was hoped to be reopened around 2 p.m., but is not expected to be accessible until Wednesday Dec. 14.
Until the building was reopened, accommodations were made around the campus to meet students’ needs. For printing and computer use, both B-101 and I4-203 were open for use. B-101 will close at 10 p.m., and I4-203 will close at 7 p.m. For those needing tutoring, I4-203 was also be the room in which students would find that service. The High Tech Center was also relocated to the Associated Student Government office for the time that the LRC was closed.
For students looking for a place to study for their finals, the Mesa Commons, and Math and Science buildings, will be available for use. Classes usually held inside the LRC were also relocated to the MC, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and I400 buildings. Other classroom relocations can be found at https://twitter.com/sdmesacollege/status/808791752664457216.
Updates, via social media and email, were made throughout the day regarding the situation. According to Vice President of Administrative Services, Rachelle Agatha, “Communications has been tweeting and Facebooking statuses too.” You can see the most recent Twitter updates at twitter.com/sdmesacollege or Facebook updates at facebook.com/SanDiegoMesaCollege.
Seeing that the LRC is expected to be reopened within the following 24 hours, regular locations for classes and student services should back in order on Wednesday.
