Libya has undergone a vast uprising and revolt of its people towards their tyrannical leader of over 40 years, Muammar Gaddafi. This uprising has sparked an intervention of an international coalition of forces, of which includes the United States. Our involvement, however, has remained a controversial issue. Although our country is indeed in an economic crisis, our involvement in the support of the Libyan uprising is necessary in order to uphold the values of human rights.
Many question and argue against President Obama’s decision to get involved in the uprising of the Libyan people. Many people questions Obama’s intentions and whether our country can afford having our troops support another war, given the current economic crisis.
Muammar Gaddafi is a ruthless leader whose regime must be stopped. Gaddafi has suppressed the Libyan people for over 40 years. Inspired by uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, the Libyan people have risen in opposition and formed a rebellion force against Gaddafi’s military regime. However, Gaddafi will not back down so easily.
Gaddafi has fought back against the rebel forces, invading and taking over cities and towns. Gaddafi has already killed many of the rebel forces, and even civilians. Gaddafi has mercilessly slaughtered his own people to showcase his dominance.
Gaddafi’s actions are unacceptable for a country’s leader and unacceptable as a human being. How can Gaddafi ruthlessly kill his own people? How can a man like that be a leader? A leader should put the safety and security of his or her country before anything else. Without the support of the people, a leader is nothing. Gaddafi’s actions were not those of a leader, but those of a tyrant. His actions were to reinforce his rule and dominance while further diminishing the rights entitled to the Libyan people.
Not only were Gaddafi’s actions unethical, such as mercilessly killing protesters, they were inhumane. There is no justification for ruthlessly killing innocent civilians. These are not soldiers that Gaddafi has killed, they are regular people like you and I. They are any men, women, or children who choose to stand up for their rights. These are the same rights that we take for granted, such as freedom of speech. We must become involved to preserve these rights we’re entitled to. We have to take the responsibility to ensure that natural rights of humans are upheld.
Gaddafi is no more than a coldblooded murderer and must be stopped. Our country’s involvement is necessary and should be exemplary to everyone to stand up and fight for your rights as humans.
