A high scoring showdown between Mesa College and LA Harbor College resulted in a Mesa victory, however between the two teams a total of 58 points and 790 total yards were allowed.
This season the Mesa defense allows 31 points per game, a situation that forces the offense to create even more scoring opportunities at a higher rate.
So far the offensive unit has been able to carry this burden, scoring two points higher than a season ago. The Olympians average 26.1 points per game.
Their most recent offensive showcase came at home on Oct. 26 against Los Angeles Harbor College, a game in which the Olympians won by a final score of 31-27.
Anchored by sophomore quarterback Phillip Staback’s four touchdown passes, the offensive unit began to fire on all cylinders outscoring Harbor in the second half 28-20.
Freshman running back Terrance Curtis and sophomore wide receiver Michael Medina were on the receiving end of all four touchdowns.
Staback and Medina connected on three of the four touchdown passes, making it the ninth time this season the tandem have found the end zone for six.
Staback’s four touchdowns gave him 18 on the season earning him the 13th spot in this category amongst other conference opponents. Staback is completing 51 percent of his passes while averaging 192.6 yards per game.
Although the offense displayed such great presence as they overcame a deficit they didn’t receive as much praise as they should have received.
Part of this due to the fact that all attention was on the defense and the 27 points allowed along with the near 400 yards of total offense.
Luckily for Mesa their special teams unit made some game changing plays in key moments, specifically sophomore free safety Matt Collins. In the fourth quarter Collins blocked a point after attempt along with a potentially game winning field goal attempt by Harbor.
Collins effort sealed the game and allowed Mesa to walk away with a four-point lead along with their third victory of the season.
Mesa College is now 3-1 in their last four games recording an overall record of 3-4 along with a 2-1 record in conference.
At this point last season the Mesa College football program saw themselves in last place in their conference with a conference record of 1-4, however with conference play finished Mesa concludes in third place.
As the seasons end approaches Mesa is currently one game under .500 as they continue to battle for a winning record.
In their final two games Mesa will see themselves away from home as they take on Southwestern and Compton College.
