The team, led by four sophomore captains — Ami Lagrimas, Myah Gomez, Maria Coronado, and Jaden Mojica — demonstrated impressive skill and confidence despite being a relatively inexperienced group. Freshman Lily Rosales expressed the team’s unity before the match, stating, “We’re a strong team as a whole.” Also stating that their team is very selfless in their approach to the game and that they “play through their partner.”
While the girls displayed determination, they also recognized the need to improve on certain aspects of their game.“We have a really good volleyball players who work really hard, with a good core and buy in for the program,” Lester said.
The team acknowledged that simple mistakes, such as a bad serve or set, could impact their chances for a state title. They need to fine-tune those mistakes and continue to get after it.
Despite these challenges, the players exhibited resilience, overcoming adversity during the match. Their competitive nature and strong work ethic are evident as they continue to push each other to excel both on and off the court. The chemistry among teammates was palpable, with constant communication and support enhancing their performance. From the court to the sideline the girls’ energy was unmatched on Olympus Beach.
The girls’ dynamic energy and scrappy play style not only contributed to their victory but also embodied the spirit of the Mesa family and community, showcasing what it means to be a part of this team. The team sets its sights towards Palomar College on Feb. 28.
