The Oakland Raiders (2-0) lead by quarterback Derek Carr, met the Washington Redskins (1-1), lead by quarterback Kirk Cousins in week three in the AFC versus NFC showdown in Maryland on Sept. 24.
With an opening start of the game, Raiders quarterback Carr was picked off by Redskin defensive back Montae Nichson, who attempted a pass to receiver Seth Roberts. This was a big game changer for the Redskins, ranked no. 6 defense in the 2017 regular season, who felt like they had a chip on their shoulder due to the statements made by Raiders receivers Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper, who said on ESPN that they were going to have 200 yards receiving against Redskins secondary. Washington Redskins defensive back Josh Norman stated “they don’t come up in our house talking about what they gonna do and what they gonna have because we are here.“ This leaves both pro bowl receivers with one catch over 6 yards.
With both teams standing at 2-1 and third in their division, this was the game of the week.
Many felt that the Oakland Raiders offense was “unstoppable” and that it would be a tough game versus the Redskins, who have been playing their tails off this season.
Cousins was a spectacular player, having completed 25 of 30 passes including a touchdown pass to Thompson, Vernon Davis and a 52-yard pass to Josh Doctson.
Thompson had 150 yards receiving and 38 yards rushing. The Redskins defensive front dominated the Raiders offensive line from the jump start.
On the other hand, Oakland’s rushing offense, which came in ranked fifth in the NFL, managed just 32 yards. Under pressure all night, Carr was 19 of 31 pass completions for 118 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The Raiders went 0 of 11 completions on third downs as part of their anemic offense effort, leaving them with only one touchdown from Carr to Jared Cook, which was a 21-yard pass late in the fourth quarter.
